The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

During the month of June, the Church honors the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These two hearts remind us of God’s infinite love and of Mary’s loving response to that love.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus symbolizes Christ’s boundless mercy, compassion, and self-giving love for humanity. Through His Heart, pierced on the Cross, Jesus reveals His desire to draw all people to Himself and to offer forgiveness, healing, and peace.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary reflects a heart completely united to God’s will. Mary’s heart was filled with faith, humility, and maternal love as she accompanied her Son throughout His life, suffering, death, and resurrection. She continues to lead us closer to Jesus and encourages us to trust in Him.

Together, the Hearts of Jesus and Mary invite us to grow in love, prayer, and holiness. By contemplating their example, we learn to open our own hearts more fully to God and to serve others with charity and compassion.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Faith, Art and Devotion

The Classic Parallel Portraits (Diptych) Jesus and Mary are most famously depicted in side-by-side or mirror-image portraits. In these sets, they share nearly identical color palettes (usually red and blue), both gesturing toward their exposed, glowing hearts. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is shown as an inflamed heart circled by a crown of thorns and topped with a cross, while the Immaculate Heart of Mary is wrapped in a wreath of roses and often pierced by a single sword, echoing Simeon’s prophecy.

English: Painting of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary by Vicente López Portaña (19 September 1772 – 22 July 1850) Spanish painter, considered one of the best portrait painters of his time.

The work of the Sacred Hearts is part of the donations made to the Real Monasterio de la Visitación de Santa María by its founder, the Infanta Doña María Francisca de Asís de Braganza y Borbón.

The theme represented is original by Vicente López. Various versions of the same theme are known by the artist, this painting being the most complete from an iconographic point of view.

This image is commonly attributed to Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato (1609–1685), known as Sassoferrato. He was an Italian Baroque painter especially known for serene and devotional images of the Virgin Mary and Child, painted in a style inspired by Raphael. The calm expression, soft modeling of the faces, smooth finish, and deep blue and red Marian colors are all characteristic of his work.
