This image is commonly attributed to Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato (1609–1685), usually known simply as Sassoferrato. He was an Italian Baroque painter especially known for serene and devotional images of the Virgin Mary and Child, painted in a style inspired by Raphael. The calm expression, soft modeling of the faces, smooth finish, and deep blue and red Marian colors are all characteristic of his work.
